The WRENCH – Helping Build Communities

October 2, 2020Hello and welcome to our "Focus On" series, the latest update to give you the quick run-down on a useful piece of equipment. Today we're introducing the Crown Stacker series. Pictured above is the SHR 5500, a heavy duty walkie stacker with reach. You can read what Crown has to say about it here. The Stacker line of course doesn't start and end with the SHR 5500. It's actually a family of no less than seven different lift trucks, all with their own benefits, strong points, and options. Today we'll be talking about the SHR 5500 because of how versatile it is.
First up is a sense of familiarity: Crown has used the same X10 Handle seen on their widely used WP 3000 series of walkie jacks with a couple of extra buttons built into the handle to control the tilt, side-shift and reach functions. While the internals are different to accommodate the new functions, users familiar with Crown's other electric jacks will be comfortable with the SHR 5500 controls within just a few minutes.
Built with the same metal casing the internal components are quick to access and easy to service for trained technicians, and the controls are intuitive and well labeled. Standard electronic power steering means controlling the SHR 5500 takes little effort, and the easily reached Turtle Mode switch can be used to improve the steering even further at low speeds.
Next up is the question of durability and safety. A lot of times when you see a smaller or "compact" version of something it means that somewhere along the line something got skimped on. Maybe its less durable structural parts or just lighter weight components, but somewhere that full size quality gets lost.
Not so with the SHR 5500.
Designed and built with the same eye for use as Crown's larger full size lift trucks, the SHR 5500 uses the same gauge of chain and a virtually identical lift structure. Nested I-Beam mast channels increase visibility and help protect the lift cylinders from impacts, and the heavy duty mast gets heavy duty roller bearings to make sure they last. The mast also has heavy reinforcing components along the upper sections which double as a protective feature, closing in all the moving parts and making sure the operator can't accidentally come in contact with moving mast components. Boxed in outrigger tips help to protect load wheels for added life, Crown's "belly button" safety switch on the handle keeps the unit from running into the operator, and a heavy-duty mesh screen helps keep product from falling back through the wide mast to the operator. Add to all of that the power unit itself. Heavy duty steel doors (removable) protect the cast gearbox, electrical, steering, and hydraulic systems while keeping them all easy to access for technicians to work on. This means less cost to you when it comes time to service your hard working machine. To wrap things up we're going to mention a few of the options that are available for the SHR 5500, because they lend that extra productivity to an already rock solid unit.
Starting at the working end there are seven different fork lengths available from 30"-60" (760-1525mm). Small and heavy or long and light, there's an option for your situation.
Optional load wheel sizes, both larger and smaller in Crown's usual range of poly compounds. Also Wider drive tire for more traction, with sipped options as well.
Sideshifter with 4" adjustment each direction. This option decreases capacity by 300lb (140kg) though, so keep in mind what you want to lift.
A plexiglass safety shield in place of the metal mesh, to further improve your operator's view of what they're doing.
Freezer use package, in case your new unit is going to stay frosty.
Also available are an on board charger, keyless on/off, Work Assist Accessories, InfoLink Ready, alternate battery connectors, and EE options.
One option that deserves special mention is that the SHR 5500 can ship set up for Lithium-Ion batteries (like in your phone, but huge!). These new industrial batteries are more energy efficient, pack more charge into the same space, and best of all require ZERO maintenance! No off-gassing from charging, no exposing staff to acids, and no watering systems to deal with mean that these Lithium-Ion batteries are the hardest working, lowest hassle investment you can make.
The list kind of goes on from there, as an exhaustive list of options is a little beyond the scope of these Focus On articles, but it should be enough to give you an idea of how much Crown can customise a unit for your business.
In any case that's a quick run-down on some of the highlights from the Crown SHR 5500. If you want to know more you can always Click Here to see what Crown says about their product.
